  • 2-3 mele
  • 2 cucchiai colmi di dulche de leche
  • 3-4 cucchiai di panna fresca
  • zucchero aromatizzato alla cannella, q.b.
  • cannella in polvere, q.b.
  • 1 uovo sbattuto

This morning while making a super fast breakfast, my husband looked at the fruit bowl, then looked at me and said "These apples seem perfect for a cake ..." So once back home I remembered I had some puff pastry and dulce de leche in the fridge, and I decided to try this combination.
Dulce de leche is a sweet spread made out of milk and sugar, tastes like toffees and comes from South America. I really like it, especially in a banoffee pie, a cake made with this delicious spread, bananas and whipped cream, but since my husband is not a fan of banana desserts, I opted for apples.
Their sharpness is perfect to counteract the sweetness of dulche de leche, the crispness of the puff pastry is fabulous, and the fact that this dessert is so easy to be made, makes it really dangerous, it could show up on your table more often than you think!
For a cake
  • 1 wholewheat puff pastry packet
  • 2-3 apples
  • 2 heaping tablespoons dulce de leche
  • 3-4 tablespoons of fresh cream
  • cinnamon sugar, to taste
  • cinnamon powder, to taste
  • 1egg, beaten
  • sugar syrup (made with 1 heaped tablespoon of brown sugar and 3 tablespoons of water, let it boil until it reduces to a syrup) for glazing the apple slices, ptional
  • vanilla ice cream, to serve
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Roll out the puff pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and prick the surface with a fork leaving out the edges.
Wash the apples, cut them in half and remove the core with a melon baller, then slice them very thinly.
Thin the dulce de leche by mixing it with the cream and spread it over the pastry surface leaving out the outer edges.
Arrange the apple slices in a radial pattern starting from the outside and ending at the centre.
Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon sugar and then with cinnamon powder.
Fold the pastry edges inward and brush them with beaten egg.
Bake for about 30 minutes and serve warm, if you want you can brush the apples with the sugar syrup.
